How bright is the handle light?
The TrailScout handle features a powerful LED that outputs over 300 lumens - bright enough to illuminate the path ahead and see what your dog is getting into. This is a professional-grade flashlight, not a decorative glow.
What leash lengths are available?
TrailScout comes in 3 swappable options:
- 5ft - Perfect for city walks, crowded areas, and close control
- 10ft - Ideal for trail exploration and giving your dog more freedom
- Buddy System 6ft - Best for walking 2 dogs at once to keep them close
Both lengths work with the same handle system.
What's the weight capacity?
TrailScout is rated for dogs up to 150 lbs (68 kg). The leash and handle are engineered to handle strong pullers and sudden movements from large, powerful dogs.
How long does the battery last?
The handle light provides up to 8 hours of continuous use on a full charge - more than enough for even the longest adventures.
How do I charge it?
The handle charges via USB-C (cable not included included to reduce waste). Simply plug it in like you would charge your phone. The battery features auto-shutoff to prevent overheating and extends battery life.
Is it waterproof?
TrailScout is IPX4 rated, which means it's water-resistant and can handle rain, splashes, and wet conditions. It's not designed for submersion in water, but it will handle everything a normal walk throws at it.
Swappable Leash System
What does "swappable leash" mean?
The TrailScout handle and leash are separate components that attach together. This means you can:
- Switch between 5ft and 10ft leashes as well as the buddy system
- Replace worn leashes without buying a new handle
- Use different leash styles for different adventures
- Keep a backup leash ready to go
- Change your leash with the seasons or whenever you feel like mixing it up!
How do I swap the leashes?

Can I buy extra leashes?
Yes! You can purchase additional 5ft or 10ft leashes separately to have multiple options ready.
Multi-Dog Walking
Can I walk two dogs at once with TrailScout?
Yes! With the optional Buddy System adapter, you can walk up to 2 dogs with a single TrailScout handle. The Buddy System is sold separately.
What's the weight limit for walking two dogs?
When using the Buddy System, the combined weight of both dogs should not exceed 150 lbs. For example, two 70-lb dogs would be within the safe range.
Do I need two TrailScout handles for two dogs?
No - the Buddy System allows you to use one TrailScout handle to control two leashes. However, some people prefer using two handles for maximum control with larger dogs.

What is the Buddy System?
The Buddy System is an optional adapter that allows you to attach two leashes to one TrailScout handle, enabling you to walk two dogs simultaneously with one hand.
How does the Buddy System work?
The adapter connects to your TrailScout handle and provides two attachment points for separate dogs. Each dog gets their own leash with independent movement while you maintain control with one handle. The connection point swivels so your dogs are able to explore where they want without getting tangled.
Do both dogs need The TrailScout System to use the Buddy System?
Yes. The buddy system is exclusive to The TrailScout System.
Is the Buddy System included?
No, the Buddy System is sold separately as an optional accessory.
Safety & Durability
Is the handle comfortable for long walks?
Yes. The handle is made with strong and ergonomic ABS material that's designed to stay comfortable even during extended walks or when your dog pulls. It's built to reduce hand fatigue.
What if my dog is a strong puller?
TrailScout was originally designed for a 90-pound dog who pulled hard. The handle and leash construction can handle strong, sudden pulls from large dogs while maintaining your grip and comfort.
Will the light overheat?
No. The LED and battery system are designed with proper heat dissipation. The battery also features auto-shutoff protection to prevent overheating.
How durable is the leash material?
The leash is made from high-strength webbing designed for outdoor use. It's built to handle regular pulling, weather exposure, and active dogs.
Can I use it in the rain?
Yes. The IPX4 water resistance rating means TrailScout can handle rain and wet conditions. Just avoid submerging it in water.
Usage & Functionality
Do I need to turn the light on manually?
Yes. The handle has a simple button to turn the light on and off, giving you control over when you need illumination.
Can I use it during the day?
Absolutely! Many customers use TrailScout for all walks - day and night. The ergonomic handle and swappable system make it ideal for any time of day. The light is there when you need it.
What if I forget to charge it?
If the battery dies during a walk, TrailScout still functions as a regular leash. You won't lose control of your dog - you'll just lose the light until you can recharge.
Will the light scare my dog?
Most dogs adjust to the light within one or two walks. The light points forward (not at your dog), and dogs quickly associate it with walk time.
Does it work for small dogs?
Yes! While TrailScout was designed to handle dogs up to 150 lbs, it works perfectly for small dogs too. Many customers with 20-40 lb dogs love it for the visibility and control.

Standard shipping is around a week for the lower 48. Shipping times can be longer for Alaska and Hawaii. Expedited options available at checkout.

How do I clean the handle?
Wipe down the handle with a damp cloth. Avoid submerging it in water or using harsh chemicals.
How do I clean the leash?
The leash can be hand-washed with mild soap and water. Allow it to air dry completely before storage.
How often should I charge the battery?
Charge whenever the light starts to dim/flicker or after 6-8 hours of use. For longest battery life, avoid letting it fully discharge repeatedly.
Can I replace the battery?
The battery is not replaceable. Contact our customer service team if you feel there is an issue with your battery.
